After winning triple with FC Bayern Munich, Robert Lewandowski won the election for "Footballer of the Year" in Germany for the first time. The 32-year-old received 276 votes among sports journalists in the vote carried out by the "kicker". He was clearly ahead of his Bayern colleagues Thomas Müller (54 votes) and Joshua Kimmich (49 votes).

Lewandowski is the successor to Marco Reus from Dortmund. He is the first foreign winner of the annual election since Belgian Kevin De Bruyne in 2015. In Poland, the attacker was eight times Footballer of the Year. In the past Corona season he was also the top scorer in the Bundesliga (34 goals), Champions League (15) and DFB-Pokal (6).

As expected, Hansi Flick also won the "Coach of the Year" election. The 55-year-old, who led Bayern to the triple after taking over the post of head coach from Niko Kovac in November 2019, won with 223 votes, well ahead of Jürgen Klopp (164). Last year's winner won the first championship in three decades with last year's Champions League winner Liverpool FC in England. Christian Streich from SC Freiburg came third with 40 votes.

With 212 out of a total of 446 valid votes cast, the Danish national player Pernille Harder was named "Footballer of the Year" by VfL Wolfsburg. The 27-year-old won ahead of her club colleague Alexandra Popp (76 votes) and Dzsenifer Marozsan (36 votes) from Olympique Lyon, who had been elected in 2017, 2018, 2019.
