Terry Fox was a young Canadian marathoner who in 1980 covered more than 5,000 kilometers with an artificial limb to raise awareness in the world on the theme of the fight against cancer.

Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981, aged just 23, from cancer.

Despite losing a leg to the disease, he had decided to continue his 5,000km run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research.

For his feat and courage, he was awarded the highest civilian honor in the country, the Order of Canada.

His 'marathon of hope', run with an artificial limb, started from St. John (Newfoundland) on September 2, 1980 and ended on the other side of the country, in Thunder Bay (Ontario).

Shortly after completing his feat, Fox was diagnosed with an extended lung disease.

Canadian newspapers, radios and televisions had followed the march daily: the images of the big dark eyes and the lips tightened in the effort went around the world.

Fox's goal was to raise one million dollars, the Canadian people paid in twenty-three.
