(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 13 - Microsoft announced that its offer to buy the Chinese TikTok was rejected by the owner company ByteDance, on the eve of the deadline of September 15 set by Donald Trump for the banning of the popular app.

The move, the New York Times reveals, leaves Oracle, one of Trump's few publicly allied Silicon Valley companies, as the only company in the running to buy.

ByteDance has indicated that Oracle will be its "technology partner" but it is unclear if that means it will take the majority of the app.

"We are convinced that our proposal would have been good for TikTok users while also protecting national security interests," Microsoft said in a statement.

It is not clear why the offer was rejected.
