The World Health Organization has called for a rethinking of the care and rights of the elderly after the deaths of Covid 19.

Reuters quoted Michael Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, as saying today: "We must carefully rethink our relationship with the elderly after the massive death toll from Covid-19 disease that robbed us of a generation of wisdom."

In a speech on the human rights implications of the Coronavirus pandemic at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Ryan urged countries to consider caring for the elderly as a “human rights issue,” and said: “We need to carefully rethink our relationship with the older generations and the way we care for this generation, and we must look at the needs of a generation. Elderly people as a question of rights to care and the right to social contact.

Ryan indicated that mortality rates in care homes have reached 80 percent of all deaths from Covid 19 in some high-income countries.
