Laurent Petitgirard, perpetual secretary, and the members of the Academy of Fine Arts have announced the death of their colleague Jean Cardot, which occurred on the night of October 12 to 13, 2020 at the age of 90 years.

Jean Cardot was a member of the sculpture section of the Academy, where he was elected to the chair of sculptor Paul Belmondo on November 9, 1983.

He had succeeded Paul Belmondo at the Academy of Fine Arts, a great continuity, but he had been able to welcome there with open arms in 2018 the young plastic artist of the gardens of Versailles and the Abu Dhabi basins, Jean-Michel Othoniel, born like him in Saint-Etienne, apparently his opposite, with whom he had long, warm conversations.

Passed by the Casa Velasquez, he remained very attentive all his life to the young artists that France sent to Madrid and who, according to him, were often more original than those who left for the Villa Medici.
