The Vatican admitted that Pope John Paul II was warned of the sexual misconduct allegations against former Archbishop Theodore McCarrick.
According to an internal Vatican investigation, focused on what the Catholic authorities knew or did not know, the pontiff decided to give him the position of archbishop of Washington.
McCarrick would have denied the allegations.
