US President-elect Joe Biden will nominate former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg to head the Department of Transportation, three sources told NBC News, the sister network of Noticias Telemundo.

Buttigieg is one of Biden's longtime rivals in the White House race and the only former 2020 presidential hopeful to be openly gay.

It was long

speculated that the 38-year-old politician would join the Biden Administration.

The former mayor ended his presidential candidacy just before the crucial Super Tuesday elections in early March.

Immediately after, he endorsed the former vice president.
