Swiss Christian Gross is officially the new coach of Schalke 04, chosen by the club to replace the exonerated Manuel Baum in an attempt to save a disastrous season, with the Gelsenkirchen team last in the Bundesliga standings.

Gross, 66, is the fourth manager to sit on the Schalke bench in 2020. In almost 30 years of his career he has coached, among others, Stuttgart, Grasshopers and Basel, clubs with which he has repeatedly been champions of Switzerland. In recent years he has worked in Egypt at the helm of Zamalek and in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli. Gross, also known for saving Tottenham from relegation in the 1997-98 season, has not coached in Europe for eight years. On 2 January he will be on the bench for the match against Hertha Berlin.
