A strong earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the open Richter scale, rocked southern and central Guatemala where the capital is located on Friday, but no damage or casualties were reported in the hours that followed, announced the Guatemalan Institute of Seismology (Insivumeh).
The earthquake, which occurred at 10:10 a.m. local time (4:10 p.m. GMT) on Friday, had its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, a hundred kilometers from the coast and 10 km deep, the press told reporters. Insivumeh spokesperson Emilio Barillas.
The earthquake was felt on the south coast of Guatemala, as well as in the central region, said David de Leon, the spokesman for civil protection. “
For the moment, no bodily injury or material damage has been reported but we are still checking,
” added Mr. de Leon. Guatemala, at the convergence of the Caribbean, Cocos and North American tectonic plates, is prone to frequent earthquakes.
