(ANSA) - ROME, JANUARY 16 - Tragedy in the Villadei Diamanti retirement home in Lanuvio, near Rome.

Five guests in their 80s died and another seven people were taken to hospital in serious condition.

The alarm was given by an employee of the facility who, arriving this morning, found all 12 present (two health workers and 10 guests) unconscious.

The hypothesis of the investigators is that the elderly died of monoxide poisoning.

In fact, from the first surveys carried out by the firefighters with appropriate equipment, traces of carbon monoxide were found inside the retirement home even if the source of the emission has not yet been identified.

The firefighters made the structure safe and the Carabinieri of the Frascati Investigative Unit carried out the technical and scientific surveys.

To clarify the causes, checks will also be carried out on the boiler, the ventilation system and the systems.

The entire structure, at the end of the inspections and surveys, will be placed under seizure.

On the eve of the tragedy, 9 elderly guests and 3 operators had positive results at Covid.
