(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 19 - ROME, JAN 19 - Born in Caltanissetta on March 21, 1924, Macaluso joined the Communist Party of Italy before the fall of the fascist regime.

He began his political career in 1951 as a Sicilian regional deputy of the Italian Communist Party.

A member of the reformist (or, as he preferred, improvedist) current of the party, of which Giorgio Napolitano was also a member, in 1960 he entered the party leadership.

National parliamentarian for seven legislatures (1963-1992), he was also director of l'Unità from 1982 to 1986 and last director of Il Riformista from 2011 to 2012. When the PCI broke up, he joined the PDS.
