A controversial Polish court ruling imposing a near-total ban on abortion will come into effect today, the government said in an announcement.

The protest group 'Women's Strike' is preparing to take to the streets this evening after the Constitutional Court has clarified a sentence banning abortion. The court published a justification for what it decided last October to strengthen what was already one of the strictest laws in the European Union on termination of pregnancy. "See you today in front of the Constitutional Court at 6:30 pm," writes on Facebook Women's Strike. According to the 154-page court clarification, abortion is permissible if there is a high probability of irreversible or fatal harm to the fetus, if the mother's life is in danger, and in cases of incest and rape.
