Several gunmen attacked a value van in Frankfurt am Main and were able to flee.
The attack occurred in the morning in the entrance area of a savings bank in the Bergen-Enkheim district.
According to the police, the attackers had firearms with them and threatened the security staff of a valuables transport company.
"Due to the quick and prudent action of the money messengers, the robbers did not succeed in getting hold of the suitcase," the investigators said in the evening.
At least one shot was fired during the attack, it was said.
According to the information, nobody was injured.
The robbers fled the scene in a car, the police said.
Officials later found a vehicle on fire a few blocks away.
It could be the getaway car, it said.
The police searched for the fugitives "at high pressure" all day.
She cautioned the population and warned against picking up hitchhikers.
Potential witnesses have been asked to report.
