(ANSA) - TEHRAN, FEBRUARY 20 - The director general of the IAEA, the Argentine Rafael Grossi, is expected today in Tehran, for a mission at the last minute to attempt mediation on the eve of a crucial deadline for the lifting of US sanctions, just as the first openings towards a return to the negotiating table on Iran's nuclear program come from American President Joe Biden.

The Iranian parliament has ruled that if the US sanctions imposed since 2018 are not lifted by tomorrow, a series of measures will come into effect from Tuesday, including restrictions on IAEA inspections of facilities with suspected undeclared nuclear activities, including military sites.

Yesterday Grossi tweeted that in Tehran "he will meet with Iranian officials to find a mutually acceptable solution compatible with Iranian law", so that the IAEA can "continue essential verification activities in Iran".
