Feminism and language: Luise F. Pusch finds "these double forms unbearable"

3/6/2021, 3:16:23 PM

It is annoying to always mention men, so we should only use the feminine form, demanded the linguist Luise F. Pusch around 40 years ago. She is used to resistance to this.

Binnen-I, colon and gender asterisk: Germany argues over gender-sensitive language.

Moderators such as Anne Will and various speakers in “heute journal” deliberately set mini-pauses for the word politician: inside, spoken: politician - break - inside.

This form should linguistically take into account women, men and intersex people alike.

Just recently, however, a woman failed before the Federal Constitutional Court with the demand that her Sparkasse address her as a customer - she remains the customer.

The linguist Luise F. Pusch, 76, has been observing the debate about gender-sensitive language for more than 40 years - she pushed it forward herself, did persuasive work and dealt with setbacks.

SPIEGEL:

Ms. Pusch, you are considered the “mother of gender-sensitive language” in Germany.

Do you like that?
