A bus carrying dozens of Ukrainians crashed in Poland.

As the local authorities and rescue workers announced, the bus came off the road and crashed into a ditch.

Five people died, around 40 were injured.

There had previously been reports of six fatalities, but the number has been corrected.

One person is in critical condition and is currently being operated on in a hospital, said Subcarpathian Voivodeship administration chief Ewa Leniart at a press conference.

14 of the injured are therefore in a serious condition.

The accident occurred on Saturday night on Highway 4 near the Ukrainian border in Yaroslav in southeastern Poland.

As Leniart announced, there were 57 people on the bus.

A spokesman said the bus was on its way to Ukraine and the passengers were mostly asleep at the time of the accident.

Accordingly, it should have been mainly young commuters.

The cause of the accident is still unclear.

Such bus trips between Poland and Ukraine are not uncommon.

According to the Reuters news agency, one to two million workers regularly commute between the two countries.

People from Ukraine fill gaps in the labor market in Poland, which has seen rapid economic growth in recent years.
