The authorities in Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on Thursday morning ordered the evacuation of part of the city because of the risk of eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano, immediately causing the exodus of tens of thousands of people, noted an AFP correspondent.

"

We cannot currently rule out an eruption on land or under the lake (Kivu) which could occur very soon or even without any warning sign

", declared on local media the military governor, General Constant Ndima, who quoted the names of ten city districts.

His announcement was followed by the immediate departure of tens of thousands of people towards the southwest, towards the Congolese region of Masisi, and the nearby Rwandan border.
