An underwater pipeline of Petroleos Mexicanos, the Mexican state oil company better known as Pemex, ran into a problem on Friday that triggered a fire on the surface of the water in the Gulf of Mexico near the Ku-Charly platform.

The images of the fire - disseminated on social networks - have a great visual impact: they show an eye of fire in the middle of the water.

Petroleos Mexicanos has enlisted the help of specialized boats for the control of fires in the sea that have tamed the flames with jets of water and nitrogen from above.

No victims or injuries were registered on the platform.

An anonymous source within Pemex told the media that it all started with a storm that damaged the platform's machinery. It is unclear for the time being that environmental damage caused the fire on the ocean surface and the loss of gas into the water.

The gas leak that caused the fire occurred 140 meters from the Ku-Charly platform, in Pemex's largest oil field, Ku-Maloob-Zaap, located in Campeche Bay, south of the Gulf of Mexico.
