Japanese authorities announced that rescue operations are continuing in search of about 80 people believed to be missing, two days after heavy rains caused landslides in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, in the southwest of the country, killing at least three people and destroying at least 130 homes.
"We are seeking to rescue as many people buried under the rubble as soon as possible, and the police, firefighters and military personnel are doing their best," Japan's Kyodo news agency quoted Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga as telling reporters today.
The city government has confirmed that 67 of the 147 people whose whereabouts are unknown have survived, based on the basic population registry and a search is underway for others.
An earlier toll indicated that two people were killed and more than 20 others were missing due to landslides.
