(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 10 - London's Tower Bridge was closed to traffic this morning, after a "technical failure" blocked its closure for almost twelve hours, causing traffic in the British capital to go haywire. The BBC reports it.

It is the second time in a year that the bridge, one of the most iconic sites on the London skyline, has been blocked. Built between 1886 and 1894, Tower Bridge was at the time considered "the largest and most sophisticated mobile bridge ever built". The gears were initially steam powered before an electrohydraulic system was installed in the 1970s.

The bridge usually lifts around 800 times a year.

In August 2020 it was stuck for over an hour, causing traffic paralysis in surrounding areas. (HANDLE).
