Afghanistan: the lightning advance of the Taliban threatens Kabul

8/12/2021, 5:05:21 PM

STORY - In one week, the rebellion took eleven regional capitals including Herat, the third largest city in the country.

The Taliban are moving ever closer to Kabul.

On Thursday, the insurgents announced that they had captured Ghazni, just 150 km southwest of the capital.

The governor, on the run, admitted that the city had fallen.

For the insurgents, victory is highly strategic. Ghazni is the closest regional capital to Kabul and is located on the highway that leads to Kandahar, the country's second largest city. The city is therefore deprived of its line of logistical support, while under siege for weeks, this traditional bastion of the insurgents was the scene of intense fighting on Thursday. Kandahar, according to some sources, even fell on Thursday night largely into the hands of the Taliban. The situation was also desperate in Herat, Afghanistan's third largest city, where the Taliban on Thursday seized police headquarters and prison. The day before, they already assured on Twitter to have taken the Kandahar prison, located in the suburbs, to release

"hundreds of prisoners".
