A Chinese court sentenced Canadian businessman Michael Spavor to 11 years in prison for espionage and handing over state secrets to foreign countries, the Dandong Intermediate People's Court said in a statement Wednesday.

Spavor was arrested in December 2018 along with former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig on espionage charges.

Canada's ambassador to China said the Canadian government strongly condemns Spavor's verdict.
