At least six people were injured in a stabbing incident in a shopping center in the New Zealand city of Auckland, and police later killed the attacker.

Reuters quoted police as saying, "A man stormed a shopping center in the suburb of New Lin in the city, stabbing and wounding several people," noting that they located him and shot him, killing one person at the scene, but they had not yet found the motive for the attack.

Online videos showed panicked shoppers running out of the mall.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the attack as an act of terrorism carried out by a Sri Lankan who arrived in New Zealand in 2011, noting that police killed him "only 60 seconds after the attack began."

New Zealand has been on high alert since a white supremacist gunman killed 51 people in two mosques in Christchurch on March 15, 2019.
