For five years, the first funeral cooperative in France has been promising a “more transparent and humane” funeral model in Nantes and now supports 150 families per year.

summarizes bluntly Brigitte Brodin, 62, originally a pharmacy assistant.

Five years ago, she co-founded the Nantes Funeral Cooperative, which now supports 150 families per year and brings together 500 members.

The first created in France, which now has six cooperatives of this type, with Rennes, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Angers and Tulle, plus four under construction.

The holding of funerals was liberalized in 1993 after having been solely a municipal competence.

About 600,000 ceremonies are held in France each year.
