The German ski jumpers clearly missed a targeted medal on the normal hill.

The hope for a medal, maybe even a gold one, was not unfounded - after all, Karl Geiger went to the Beijing Games as the most successful ski jumper this winter.

But now the 28-year-old's first attempt clearly failed, he didn't seem to get along with the new hill in Beijing at all.

In the end he finished 15th.

Ryōyū Kobayashi from Japan won gold (275.0 points).

Silver was surprisingly won by Manuel Fettner from Austria (270.8).

Bronze went to Dawid Kubacki (265.9/Poland).

Best German jumper was Constantin Schmid (257.3) as eleventh.

Stephan Leyhe finished behind Geiger (244.4);

Markus Eisenbichler was 31st and did not qualify for the second round.

Katharina Althaus did better on Saturday.

She jumped to the silver medal, it was the first medal from Beijing for the German Olympic selection - and so far the only one.
