War in Ukraine: pro-Russian separatists hope for quick victory thanks to military support from Moscow

Very little time passed between Vladimir Putin's announcement that he was launching a

"special military operation"

against Ukraine and the brutal awakening of the inhabitants of the "People's Republic of Donetsk" (DPR), in the front row as well as the other separatist region of Luhansk (LPR).

In her neighborhood of Kouibichevskiy, northwest of Donetsk, a few kilometers from the front line, Victoria, 20, says she was terrified by the duration of the artillery salvoes that seemed very close to her house.

The young French and English language student was 13 at the time of the 2015 war and grew up with this ever-present threat.

The pockmarked and abandoned facades of its "rayon" (district) bear witness to this.

But this time, she quickly realized that something important was happening.
