TRIBUNE - "Contemporary Ukraine was entirely created by communist Russia," said Vladimir Putin. A falsehood worthy of Orwell explains the famous historian of communism and honorary director of research at the CNRS.

In his February 21 war speech, Vladimir Putin made a statement that astonishes the historian:

“(…) contemporary Ukraine was entirely and completely created by Russia, more exactly by communist, Bolshevik Russia.

This process began almost immediately after the revolution of 1917, and Lenin and his comrades acted in a very delicate way with Russia: they took from it, tore away from it, part of its historical territories.

By thus situating the birth of Ukraine, he "forgets" that it already had a historical existence of more than 1200 years, when the Rus was created - the first Slavic state - in this vast space which went from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, and between the Dnieper and the Dniester, with Kiev as its capital - while Saint Petersburg and Moscow were still in limbo.
