At one of the checkpoints, police confiscated staff documents, cameras and phones and even led them to the police station.

"The first investigations were difficult. It is a country at war and they suspect spies and saboteurs. The atmosphere was tense because of the language barrier," said Matamala, who has already imagined how he gets involved in a war zone thousands of miles from home.

Luckily for the journalist, along with him on the team was Argentine photographer Juan Sebastian Samudio.

"One of the local policemen saw my colleague's Argentine passport, and among all the words he said in Ukrainian, he said two words I could understand - Messi and Maradona."
