(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 20 - The residents of the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol are forced by the thousands to move to Russia: this is what the municipality of Mariupol says, quoted by some Ukrainian media.

"Civilians would be taken to camps where Russians check their cell phones and their documents to then take them to remote Russian cities," writes the Ukrainian newspaper in a tweet.

The mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boichenko, wrote on Telegram that the citizens of his city are "deported as the Nazis did during the Second World War".

"In the past week, several thousand residents of Mariupol were brought to Russia. The occupants illegally removed people from the Livoberezhny district and from an air raid shelter in the building of a sports club, where more than a thousand people, mostly women and children, they hid from the bombing, "he said.
