Thomas Bach on Alex Giladi: "We have lost the pioneer of the modern Olympic movement" | Israel today

The president of the International Olympic Committee paid tribute to the 79-year-old Israeli, who died yesterday of a serious illness • The flag of the committee in Lausanne will be lowered to half-mast for three days

A day after the death of Olympic Committee member Alex Giladi at the age of 79, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, paid tribute to him.

Bach said: "With the death of Alex Giladi we are losing the pioneer of the modern Olympic movement, especially when it comes to broadcasting, but also far beyond that. He always stood by Olympic values, when sometimes the situation was not easy for him.

"We all appreciated his open personality and his honest way of speaking even if we did not always agree, because with Alex we always knew he spoke from the heart. He was always a real person." 

The International Olympic Committee is deeply saddened to learn of the death of IOC Member Alex Gilady at the age of 79.

President Bach added: "In Alex I lost a dear friend who advised me, inspired me and supported me in many aspects. In fact, it was Alex who convinced me in 1996 to run for a seat on the board for the first time. Since then, he has always been by my side. Above all, he was A great man and a wonderful friend. " 

The IOC expresses its deep sympathy for Alex Giladi's family.

As a token of respect, the Olympic flag was lowered to half-mast at the Olympic House in Lausanne for three days.
