(CNN Spanish) --

The Honduran Prosecutor's Office confirmed that it released Colombian senator-elect Piedad Córdoba, and that the case for the alleged crime of money laundering remains open.

The Prosecutor's Office has 30 days to prove the alleged illicit origin of the US$68,000 that Córdoba had in her possession when she was detained at the Palmerola International Airport in Comayagua, which serves Tegucigalpa.

  • Colombian senator-elect Piedad Córdoba is being held "provisionally" in Honduras for carrying around US$68,000 that was not declared, reports Migration

For its part, Córdoba must present evidence of how it obtained the money in a lawful manner within the same period so that it can be returned to it.

If the stipulated time is not met, the State of Honduras will keep the money, which is currently in the custody of the Office of Seized Assets.

Córdoba will be able to return to Colombia, where she was going when she was detained at the airport.
