The price of gasoline has broken a psychologically important mark in the USA: for the first time, a gallon costs over five dollars.

The nationwide average price for regular unleaded gasoline was $5,004 a gallon on Saturday, according to a survey by the US Automobile Association AAA.

Converted, this corresponds to a price of 1.26 euros per liter.

Gasoline is therefore still significantly cheaper in the USA than in Germany.

However, prices have risen drastically in recent months.

Fuel prices rose nearly 50 percent in May from a year earlier, according to a Labor Department review.

Energy prices are among the main drivers of inflation, which in the US has climbed to its highest level in more than 40 years.

Overall, consumer prices rose by 8.6 percent in May compared to the same month last year, the ministry announced on Friday.
