Mexican Rey Vargas, still undefeated, became WBC featherweight champion in Texas, inflicting, on points, the first defeat of his career to Filipino Mark Magsayo.

The decision was not unanimous as two judges awarded the winner to Vargas (115-112), while the third gave the lead to Magsayo (114-113).


    "It was a great fight, I'm so proud, I have no words. It's my second title, I'll go back to Mexico with him," commented Vargas, 31, whose stats now speak of 36 victories in as many fights.

Vargas had already obtained a world belt, that of the WBC super bantamweight.


    Magsayo, 27, became WBC featherweight champion by beating American Gary Russell Jr. in January.


    Vargas is now aiming for the WBA world featherweight crown against his compatriot Leo Santa Cruz.
