Fires: when can we really speak of a "megafire"?

THE VERIFICATION - Since Thursday, the villages of Bordezac, Bessèges and Gagnières were in flames. The use of the term "megafire" is debated. Is it excessive?

Since Thursday, the Bordezac "megafire" has burned more than 650 hectares.

If the fire was

"fixed"

during the day on Saturday, as declared by Lieutenant-Colonel Eric Agrinier, communications officer for the Gard firefighters, it remains under close surveillance and the weather conditions remain worrying.

The device was however lightened for the night from Saturday to Sunday, after a day marked by a single resumption of fire.

During these three days, rescuers and the media repeatedly described this phenomenon as a “megafire”.

But the use of this expression to describe the Bordezac fire is not approved by everyone, including some professionals in the sector.
