Sri Lanka descends into chaos

Exasperated by the acute economic crisis, demonstrators took over the presidential palace on Saturday.

The patience of the Sri Lankans eventually died out.

After months of gas and electricity shortages, after endless hours of waiting in front of service stations for a few liters of petrol, the population has let its fed up burst out.

On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of men, women and children stormed the presidential palace.

Security forces tried to arrest them with tear gas and truncheons.

A few shots rang out.

Not long.

Police and soldiers have released President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, whose demonstrators have been calling for his resignation for more than three months.

The crowd took possession of the palace: they jumped into the swimming pool, danced on the large table in a reception room, played the piano, organized a parody of negotiations with the IMF… A way of evacuating the tension of the last few months .

The central bank exhausted its foreign exchange reserves at the start of the year.
