A girl died in a serious accident on a roller coaster at the Tivoli Friheden amusement park in the Danish city of Aarhus.

The 14-year-old came from the capital Copenhagen, as the responsible police said.

A 13-year-old boy was injured.

A TV2 reporter had previously reported on the spot that he heard a bang and then saw one of the rear cars of the 25-metre-high "Cobra" roller coaster break free.

Tivoli Friheden confirmed on Facebook and Instagram in the afternoon that the rearmost car had broken off during the operation of the railway.

The amusement park was subsequently closed until further notice.

Psychological help was offered to those affected.

According to the police, technical investigations and witness interviews should now clarify the cause of the accident.

The university city of Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark after Copenhagen.

According to reports, there had already been an accident on the affected roller coaster in 2008.
