A 70-year-old woman was stabbed by a 100-pound sailfish on a fishing boat in Florida.

This is reported by the police in Martin County.

Sailfish have a spear-shaped upper jaw and belong to the spearfish family.

They resemble swordfish.

Two of the woman's companions tried to pull the fish hanging on a fishing rod onto the boat.

Apparently they wanted to take a picture of the animal.

The sailfish pierced the woman's groin with its sharp upper jaw, the police said.

Fast Attack

The two men on the boat tried to stop the bleeding by putting pressure on the wound.

The woman was taken to the town of Stuart for medical treatment.

The boat was said to be more than three kilometers from the city.

It is not known how badly the woman was injured.

The woman said the fish attacked so quickly that she was unable to react, police said.

Sailfish are among the fastest fish species in the ocean.

The local newspaper portal "TCPalm" reports that it is recommended to take pictures of sailfish without pulling them out of the water.

This would protect both the fish and the anglers.

It is unclear whether the sailfish was released back into the water.
