Australian tennis pro Nick Kyrgios complained about annoying smells in the stadium during his 7: 6 (3), 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 4 second round victory at the US Open against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi.
Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios, who is known for his antics during matches that have worn out some opponents, took time out during the second set to complain to the referee about the smell of marijuana.
With a 4: 3 lead for Kyrgios, Bonzi had just increased the pressure on the 27-year-old Australian.
According to a "Guardian" reporter, the stadium actually smelled of cannabis.
Referee Jaume Campistol asked the spectators "to refrain from smoking" - it's not allowed on the tournament grounds anyway.
After the match in the Louis Armstrong Stadium, Kyrgios then immediately delivered the explanation that should probably take the wind out of the sails of all those who wanted to accuse him of tactics: "People don't know that I'm a severe asthmatic," said Kyrgios .
"When I run from side to side, I have trouble breathing." Kyrgios spoke about the party atmosphere in the stadium and emphasized that the US Open differed from the other three Grand Slam tournaments with its loud, rough atmosphere.
Contrary to the unwritten rules of tennis, according to which spectators are to remain quiet and seated throughout the game, the audience at the US Open is constantly on the move.
A sustained rumble of conversation can be heard from the beer and food stands.
'I feel like Wimbledon was so neat.
You kind of expect that at the Australian Open because you're Australian.
But it's just so loud here.
I can hardly hear anything."
Another incident during the game
Also in the further course of the game there should be another incident.
After suffering a break late in the third set, he looked in the direction of his box and spat on the court. "Go home if you're not going to support me anyway," he cursed and received an unsportsmanlike warning from the referee.
No. 23 seed Kyrgios meets rising American JJ Wolf in the third round on Friday.
