An Austrian private plane carrying four people has crashed into the sea off the coast of Latvia.

In a statement carried by AFP, the Latvian Aviation Agency confirmed that a small Cessna 551 plane on a flight from Spain to Cologne, Germany, crashed in the Baltic Sea northwest of Ventspils, explaining that the plane changed course during the flight and air traffic controllers were no longer able to contact it.

The agency indicated that rescue teams are currently working with boats and helicopters from Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden to search for the plane at the site of the accident.

For his part, the director of the Swedish Relief Agency, Lars Antonson, said that the plane apparently crashed after it ran out of fuel.
