The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 caused mudslides • Power lines were cut • About 87 million people in Haim district

A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck today (Monday) the province of Sichuan in western China.

According to the reports, the official number of the dead so far is 46 - but it is estimated that the number will rise in the coming hours.

About 500 rescuers were sent to the area.

It is very difficult to estimate with certainty at this stage the number of missing persons.

As a result of the incident, a huge mudslide was caused which was recorded and even distributed on social networks.

In addition, there are disruptions in the power lines and communication with several areas is cut off.

The Chinese authorities confirmed that there was "major damage" at the site.

About 87 million people live in Sichuan, of which 21 million are in the capital Chengdu - which has been under lockdown since last Friday due to the outbreak of the corona virus there.

We will recall that in June last year there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale.
