(ANSAMed) - BEIRUT, SEPTEMBER 19 - The Lebanese army intervened today in the modern center of Beirut, shooting bullets in the air to disperse hundreds of protesters gathered near the courthouse (Adliye) to demand the release of two Lebanese arrested in recent days during the protests against the Lebanese banking cartel.

This was reported by Lebanese media according to which the demonstrators had gathered since this morning in front of the gates of the Palace of Justice, clamoring for the release of the two activists.

In the early afternoon the protest had degenerated with the blocking of the nearby Adliye roundabout with garbage bins set on fire and thrown into the street.

The two arrested, locked up in the Palace of Justice from today, had participated last week in the assault on a bank in Beirut by a Lebanese account holder.
