What equipment for cross-country skiing?
Even if cross-country skiing is less physical than alpine skiing, the conditions of practice are the same and you therefore need equipment to be comfortable and above all not to be cold.
Choose technical clothing.
They will be designed for optimal comfort, but also to effectively evacuate your perspiration.
This will prevent you from getting cold and risking getting sick.
You can adopt the three-layer method:
1st layer – the breathable second skin:
this is the layer that sits directly on your skin.
Choose thermal clothing, capable of quickly wicking away your perspiration.
Contrary to what one might think, cotton should be avoided because it retains moisture and takes time to dry.
Prefer synthetic materials intended for sport;
2nd layer – protection against the cold:
when skiing, you have to protect yourself against the cold.
To do this, bet on fleeces or down jackets.
You will remain free of your movements and the breathability will be optimal.
You can also turn to jersey or lycra clothing;
3rd layer – weather protection:
to complete your cross-country skiing outfit, you will need to protect yourself from the outside elements.
The wind can be particularly unpleasant.
Opt for a windbreaker.
It is also important that your jacket is waterproof in case of snowfall that will eventually break through if your clothing is not waterproof.
As for the outfit itself, it must first consist of cross-country ski pants.
The latter must be elastic so that you can move your legs as you wish.
You can add ski tights and socks to keep you warmer.
Be careful, ski socks must be as breathable as possible so that you don't get cold.
Cross-country ski boots are not the same as for downhill skiing.
They are also much more comfortable.
So remember to rent them with your skis.
Of course, you will need skis.
They are quite thin, you can't miss the difference with classic skis.
For the top, wear technical underwear, a warm fleece-type top and a waterproof jacket to protect you from the wind.
The accessories are not to be forgotten such as gloves to protect your hands, as well as sunglasses, essential to avoid hurting your eyes in the face of the sun reflecting on the snow.
Ditto for the sticks, which allow you to move forward even on a slope.
Cross-country skiing and Nordic ski touring, what are the differences?
Are you struggling to find your way between cross-country skiing and Nordic ski touring?
We enlighten you.
Ski touring is the first ski discipline to have appeared.
It is practiced outside any marked track, and the skis are wide and short enough to offer good stability and malleability.
The shoes are quite stiff.
As for cross-country skiing, the skis are thinner and skiing is practiced on specially prepared trails.
The slopes have few differences in height, both uphill and downhill.
