In Mali, the hostage-taking of 49 Ivorian soldiers by the junta turns into a diplomatic puzzle

STORY - An administrative hiccup served as a pretext for the colonels in Bamako to imprison an entire contingent, which had come to provide logistical support to the UN peacekeeping mission.

For 100 days, 49 Ivorian soldiers have been held as “

hostages

” in Bamako, the Malian capital.

Côte d'Ivoire assures that they had been dispatched within the framework of the UN mission.

For its part, the junta at the head of the Transition in Mali denounces "

mercenaries

" who have come to destabilize the country.

It is now demanding, in return for their release, the extradition of political figures.

The talks, held under the arbitration of Togo, are stalling.

On October 7, however, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara announced the “

very rapid

” occurrence of a “

happy outcome

”.
