The most polluting cars will be automatically penalized if they pass through low-emission zones, the government has announced.

The first ministerial committee for monitoring low-emission zones (ZFE) announced on Tuesday the establishment of an “automated sanction control” system against excessively polluting vehicles prohibited in the agglomerations concerned by the system by the second half of the year. 2024.

Due to the lack of checks on vehicles entering the restricted zone, the ZFEs were accused of being at a standstill by some elected officials.

Asked about the installation of gates or cameras to carry out these checks, the Minister for Ecological Transition Christophe Béchu assured that the “technical characteristics of the projects selected will be presented when they are known”.

Offenders will be liable to a “theoretically class 4” fine, i.e. a maximum of 750 euros, he specified.
