Dozens of fires broke out in northern Spain due to an unprecedented rise in temperatures.

Reuters quoted Spanish regional emergency agencies as saying that 40 fires were reported in the Basque Country and the Spanish regions of Asturias and Cantabria after temperatures reached 30 degrees Celsius, which raised concerns about changing weather patterns in Europe.

The Spanish National Meteorological Service predicted yesterday that this month will be the hottest in the country's history.

Statistics from the Spanish government indicate that this year was the worst year for forest fires to occur in the country, as the fires destroyed 260 thousand hectares.

According to data from the European Union's Joint Research Center, forest fires at the level of Europe burned on 775,941 hectares this year, the second largest area recorded in history.
