(ANSA) - MADRID, 05 NOV - The Spanish police announced today that they had seized 32 tons of cannabis buds during an operation that led to the arrest of 20 people: this is the "largest seizure of this substance in the world", according to the country's authorities.

The operation, called 'Jardines' took place in the last few weeks in several Spanish cities, including Toledo and Valencia, where suspected traffickers stored most of the goods, the Guardia Civil said.

In a statement, the police announced that the operation "ended with the seizure of 32 tons of marijuana buds", equivalent to the production of "1.1 million" cannabis plants, "the largest seizure of this substance.

The cannabis plants, explained the Guardia Civil, were vacuum-packed to be shipped to various regions of Spain and other European countries, "mainly Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium".

In total, 20 people between the ages of 20 and 59 - nine men and eleven women - were arrested.

The organization to which they belonged "controlled the entire drug production and distribution process," said the Guardia Civil.
