The International Cryospheric Climate Initiative Research Network warned in a report published today that climate change is causing the world's permafrost to melt rapidly, predicting that Arctic sea ice will disappear in summer by 2050.
Reuters quoted the report, which was published by the network, coinciding with the COP27 climate summit in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh: that during this year alone, rain fell on East Antarctica in March, when air temperatures reached exceptionally high and during the summer the Alps lost five percent of their Its ice cover Greenland also set a new record for snowmelt at that time of year.
“Just as there is no longer a reliable way to keep warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius, there is no reliable way to avoid an ice-free summer,” said Robbie Mallett, co-author of the report and a researcher specializing in sea ice at University College London. After eight years of record-high temperatures on the planet, there is mounting evidence that the world's glaciers are melting at a much faster and faster rate than scientists expected.
Mallet concluded the report by noting that this would have a profound impact on a region of more than 4.5 million people that faces increasing erosion as climate change feeds stronger winds and waves.
