A Briton who traveled to Ukraine to fight Russian troops has been killed, his family said on Wednesday as part of a crowdfunding campaign to repatriate his body.

Simon Lingard “unfortunately lost his life in Ukraine on Monday November 7,” his family said on the GoFundMe donation appeal platform.

“The Ukrainian army has offered to bring him back to England, but we need help showing him the respect and adoration he deserves by giving him the best of farewells,” his family wrote.

A spokesperson for the British Foreign Office confirmed "supporting the family of a British citizen who lost his life in Ukraine", without further details on the causes and place of his death.

“We are in contact with the local authorities about this death,” he adds.

Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in February, the UK advised its nationals against traveling there.

Several British army veterans or aid workers who nevertheless made the trip to Ukraine have lost their lives there in recent months.
