Thousands of health workers demonstrated in the Spanish capital, Madrid, today, against privatization, staff shortages and harsh working conditions.
Local media reported that the demonstrators gathered in Cibeles Square in Madrid to protest their working conditions and to reject privatization projects in the health sector.
The demonstrators carried banners reading "Madrid rises for public health".
Doctors and other health workers in Madrid have been on strike for two weeks and are calling on the authorities concerned to undo changes to the health system, which is seeing the closure of some clinics and the opening of new emergency departments.
Unions are protesting against what they describe as the privatization of public health services, the shortage of cadres and the increasing burdens on employees in the health sector, which leads to a decline in the quality of health services.
