He is said to have intentionally set a fire in accommodation for Ukrainian refugees: the police arrested a suspect in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There shouldn't be a political background.

Four weeks after the devastating fire at a refugee camp in Groß Strömkendorf near Wismar, a person from the region was arrested on Wednesday.

The public prosecutor's office in Schwerin announced that he was an urgent suspect.

There is therefore no political background.

A 32-year-old volunteer firefighter was identified as the suspect, who is said to have set three other fires, the prosecutor said.

The building occupied by Ukrainian refugees was completely destroyed in the fire.

The 14 residents and three carers were able to escape unharmed from the thatched building.

After the devastating fire on October 19, the police assumed arson early on.

The investigators had not ruled out a political background because a few days earlier a swastika graffiti had been found on the entrance sign of the accommodation.

In the weeks before, there had also been an unexplained series of fires in the region, in which stacked hay bales in fields and forest areas had been destroyed.

Just a week before the fire in the refugee shelter, an empty thatched house in Blowatz also caught fire.

Groß Strömkendorf belongs to the municipality of Blowatz.
